According to Jeffrey Lupient, one of the best examples of a situation wherein parental wisdom comes in is buying a car seat. Here, parents need patience and effort. Today, Jeffrey Lupient shares three things parents have to remember when they choose a car seat

Register the car seat as soon as you get it.

Registering your car seat, while it may be a bit of a hassle, could mean a huge difference. According to Jeffrey Lupient, as you register your car seat, you put yourself on a mailing list. You'll be notified when any problems come up, such as safety recalls. You may also receive other goodies, such as coupons and other ads for useful items as well.

That said, the important part here is that you'll receive a notification if your seat has been found non-compliant, which may pose a risk to your child in some way.

Make sure you are buying the right seat.

You have a large selection of car seats to choose from. The right seat often has little to do with colors and designs or even price. 

First, you have to determine the right type of seat based on your child's age, size, and weight. Manufacturers list this in the seat's manual. Next up, look for a good fit for your vehicle, too. According to Jeffrey Lupient, some parents regret their choice when they have to add padding to get their child's seat to fit in the car properly. Remember that even if a seat fits Canadian law, it may not provide the best safety.

Also, take into account that currently, five-point harnesses provide the safest restraint for your child, which means you have to take a look at the type of harness on the seat. Lastly, don't get sidetracked by the perks of a car seat before you determine if it's a good fit.

Always look for and never settle for anything less than a brand-new one.  

Your friends will always want to make the financial burden of a new baby lighter on you by offering you all their hand-me-downs -- and for some things, this is okay -- but not for car seats. Keep in mind that there are expiration dates on car seats.

With new data and technology becoming available, seat manufacturers redesign their seats for improved safety. They also redesign when vehicle styles and models evolve. Jeffrey Lupient adds that the newest model car seats provide a lower risk of injury to your child.
