When it comes to your child's safety, buying a used car seat may seem out of the question. But the truth is, you can find a gently used car seat at a cheaper price so long as you go through the proper safety checks and buy from a trusted seller.

If the car seat hasn't been in a car crash, is not close to expiring, is in good condition, and has not been recalled, you can purchase a gently used car seat confidently. Here's what to consider before buying one. 

Ensure the Car Seat Has Not Been in a Crash 

It's important to know whether a car seat has been in a car crash, says Jeffrey Lupient. The NHTSA has guidelines around whether a car seat is usable after it's been involved in a car crash, especially if airbags were deployed. A serious motor vehicle crash can affect the integrity of the car seat.

Be sure to ask about crash history before buying a used car seat. Unfortunately, there's no way to really know a car seat's crash history, and you'll have to rely on the seller's honesty. However, most sellers are parents who understand the importance of this information and should give you the car seat's full history. 

Check the Expiration Date 

It might seem silly that a car seat and a carton of eggs have something in common. But both do come with an expiration date, notes Jeffrey Lupient. Car seats expire because, over time, the seat will undergo normal wear and tear that will cause it to either not meet safety standards or have outdated safety features. Usually, the lifespan of a car seat is six to 10 years after its manufacturing date.

Make Sure the Car Seat Has Not Been Recalled 

Car seat manufacturers recall their products if they discover a part that is potentially unsafe or dangerous. You can check if a car seat has been recalled on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website by using the car seat's model number or VIN.

Make Sure the Car Seat Is Not Missing Parts or Broken 

It's important to make sure you're buying a gently used car seat, including all its original parts. Parts can be lost, broken, or replaced with something that better fits a family's needs. For a car seat to work properly, you'll need all of its original parts, according to the car seat manual, notes Jeffrey Lupient. 

Buy from a Trusted Retailer or Friend 

To make sure you make the right decision, buy from someone you trust—whether that's a friend, a family member, or a trusted online seller. Trusted sources are more likely to give you an honest look at the car seat's history, adds Jeffrey Lupient.
